New Student Assignment Plan Information
Thank you for visiting our school website! We hope the pages and tabs contained in this site will provide you with helpful details about our exceptional instructional program and vibrant school community. The best way to experience Hilburn, however, is to visit our campus! We welcome you to call us to schedule a tour or to learn more information specific to meeting your child’s unique learning needs. Our wonderfully supportive parents
and PTA, with whom we partner throughout the year to support teaching and learning, are an additional resource. We encourage you to visit Hilburn’s PTA page for details and contact information for our friendly and passionate PTA parent officers. All of us are here to serve you!
In addition to a STEM-infused instructional program beginning in the 2011-2012 academic year, Hilburn students will enjoy exceptionally low class sizes to optimize their learning. All classrooms in our K-5 program have rosters of just 14 to 20 students each. Our Kindergarten classrooms each have a dedicated instructional assistant as well. We know that our students will thrive in these environments!
Our History
Built in 1995 on a sprawling hilltop in a tranquil northwest Raleigh neighborhood, Hilburn Drive Academy has served the surrounding community with distinction. As the needs of the community have changed, so too has Hilburn. A large school of over nine hundred students until 2008, Hilburn went through a metamorphosis that year as another school opened nearby to alleviate overcrowding in the area. In order to ensure that Hilburn remained an excellent option for families in the area, the school board awarded the school one of the final spots in the NC STEM Collaborative Network. In the 2011-2012 school year, Hilburn has a student population of 360 students. This small-school environment allows us to build and maintain very personal relationships with children and their families, which in turn contributes to student success
Our Performance
We have earned multiple recognitions for our students’ performance over the years. In 2011, Hilburn exceeded the federal NCLB standards for Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in one hundred percent of our student subgroups, several of which were in the top three schools in the district for performance in mathematics. We also exceeded the state of North Carolina’s designation for High Growth in mathematics, and overall as a school in reading and mathematics combined.
Our Students
Hilburn Drive Academy serves a diverse student population in every sense. Rigor and relevance are key goals in our classrooms, where students enjoy the very best practices in education within a technology-rich environment. All of our classrooms have interactive Smart Boards, and students regularly utilize computers, iPads and other tools as part of an inquiry-based, problem-solving approach to learning. In addition to STEM-aligned endeavors, Hilburn’s students also enjoy opportunities to participate in our annual school musical production, various clubs and extracurricular activities.
